2019 Planning Now Underway

With 2019 in our sights, the staff here at the Community Centre are preparing for the new year. Our aim is to run programs which see the community benefit from Life Long Learning and see our community thrive on the skills we have amongst us. Our survey https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZLK57VN is still opened for your input and we encourage you to fill one in if you haven’t already done so.

Pam & Leah attended a Micro Credential Workshop in Melbourne last Friday for their Professional Development. This workshop concentrated on Community Engagement and was run by Neighbourhood House Victoria in conjunction with Coonara House. The event was the first of many to become available which allows our staff to continually develop their skills and learn new and exciting ways to engage the community in the centre. It also allowed Networking amongst other Community Houses across the entire state of Victoria.

Your community centre is opened 4 days a week from 9-3 and has many facilities for you to use. We welcome you to come and see what we can offer you and your organisation!

Self defence for women

By popular request we have secured Fiona Skene from Wise Self Defence to deliver this self defence for women workshop. By understanding the power game we can make better and more WISE decisions. There are many tactics and defusion strategies that can be taught to protect yourself through a self-defence class. This class will be run in the Studio at the Meredith Community Centre on Thursday October 25th at 7.30pm

COOKING FOR LIVING

Just one of the new classes for Term 4. Cooking for Living is a new class designed for those wishing to learn some new basic cooking skills for your family, teach basic food terminology, measurements, and nutritional values and develop knowledge of healthy cooking options.  Run over 6 weeks, these classes start on October 30, 2018 from 1-3pm at the Meredith Community Centre – places are limited so get in quick!

Tech Tea and Tales

We are excited to be collaborating with the Golden Plains Shire to introduce an exciting new program for youth and seniors.
Young job seekers in the Shire will be offered paid employment to teach technology skills to seniors, and to record some of their life stories and experiences. Older people will be invited to participate for free and will have the opportunity to spend one-on-one time with a friendly younger person, learning new ways of using technology to enhance their daily lives, and sharing some of their interests and experiences back with the young. If you would like to apply to be one of the young Tech and Story Helpers, or if you are an older resident looking to get your technology questions answered and to connect with some inspiring local young people, get in touch with the Community Centre.

BE PREPARED

Predictions are we can expect another year of above average fire risk and the long term decline in cool season rainfall combines with the strengthening el nino in the Pacific.
The CFA Fire Ready Victoria program is an informative session regarding bush fire safety. Find out:

  • what you can expect?
  • how do you prepare?
  • where do I go?
  • when do I leave?

Don't leave it until it is too late.

We are Learn Local Legends

We are thrilled to be recognised as the Learn Local Legend for our region at 2015 Learn Local Awards. It is great that even small Centres like ours are acknowledged for the work we do. It is very humbling to be included when you hear some of the amazing stories from other Community Centres and Neighbourhood Houses around Victoria. We all have the capacity to provide life-changing opportunities for the people who participate at our Centres.
